Through a break in the clouds

On the shore of the lake that afternoon, both the sky and our thoughts were worried with clouds. Still, it was better to be moving, outside in the here and now, than sorting inside through the whats and ifs. So we drifted along like  leaves through the "season of the stick,"* feeling a little better each time the the wind picked up our hair and tossed it into our voices. Then you turned to me and smiled, and a few seconds later, the clouds opened up around the very blue hole that the big rock once came through, and I smiled too.
