This painting and its companion, "Weapons of choice" was done to explore something people have been doing for ages, namely, to copy the natural world... not only in musical art and visual art, but in the instruments we use to make art. Fiddleheads was done in two afternoons down by our barn after my youngest son offered to play for the chickens, and was my first ambidextrous painting - ferns with the left hand, and fiddle with the right. I still find using both hands helpful when I paint, but more often deploy my nondominant hand to correct value and soften edges.
